Understanding Body Fat Percentage
While weight and BMI are common health metrics, they don't tell the whole story. Body fat percentage—the proportion of your total body mass that is composed of fat—is often a more accurate indicator of your overall health and fitness level. Unlike BMI, which can misclassify muscular individuals as overweight, body fat percentage distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscles, bones, organs).
The U.S. Navy Method
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy Body Fat Formula, a well-regarded method for estimating body composition. It relies on simple body circumference measurements, making it an accessible way to get a reliable estimate without expensive equipment. The formula uses your height, neck, and waist measurements (and hip for females) to calculate your body fat percentage.
Why is a Healthy Body Fat Percentage Important?
Maintaining a healthy body fat percentage is crucial for long-term health. Excess body fat, particularly around the waist, is linked to a higher risk of various health problems, including:
- Type 2 Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- Heart Disease and Stroke
- Certain types of cancer
Conversely, having too little body fat can also be unhealthy, potentially leading to nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and other issues. The goal is to stay within a healthy range for your age and gender.
