How to edit a PDF online for free

You can make common PDF changes in your browser without installing desktop software. Whether you need to correct selectable text, add a note, sign a document or rearrange pages, the steps below will help you choose the right tool.

Open the free PDF editor

1. Open your PDF

Visit LifeTools PDF Studio and select Open PDF. Choose a PDF stored on your phone or computer. Wait until the page thumbnails and document canvas appear before selecting an editing tool.

2. Edit existing text

Choose Edit text and select the text you want to change. Editing works best with PDFs containing selectable text. Some PDFs use complex fonts or flattened graphics; text edits in those documents may require manual cleanup.

Scanned PDF? A scan is often just an image of a page. You may need OCR before its text can be edited. Review OCR output carefully, especially names, numbers and legal documents.

3. Add text, notes or a signature

Use the text tool to add information, or the annotation tools to highlight and mark up content. For a signature, choose the signature tool, create your mark and place it on the appropriate page. A drawn signature may not meet every jurisdiction's requirements for a legally qualified electronic signature.

4. Work with pages

Use the page tools to rotate, extract or reorder pages when available. For separate workflows, try Merge PDF or Split PDF.

5. Save and check your PDF

Select Save to download the updated document. Open the saved file again and check that your changes appear on the correct pages. Keep a copy of the original before making major edits.

Common questions

Can I edit a PDF on my phone?

Yes. Open PDF Studio in a modern mobile browser, select a file from your phone and use the mobile editing controls. Large PDFs may take longer to render.

Can I convert a PDF to Word instead?

Yes. If you need extensive paragraph editing, try PDF to Word, edit the resulting DOCX and convert it back with Word to PDF. Conversion may change complex layouts.

Is a PDF editor the same as secure redaction?

No. Covering text with a shape is not secure redaction; the underlying content may still be recoverable. Use a dedicated redaction tool when you need to permanently remove confidential information.
